Books Beyond Borders: The French Government and Censorship in late Eighteenth-Century Europe
Do books make revolutions? That is a question often asked about the links between the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Louise Seaward will address this important problem by looking at how successful the French Government was in imposing censorship in the years before the French Revolution. This topic also raises more general issues about censorship by the state in history.
Louise Seaward is a research associate on the Bentham Project at University College London, where she works on the scholarly edition of the eighteenth and nineteenth-century writings of the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Her other research interests lie in the political and cultural history of eighteenth-century France and she has recently published articles on the links between the French and Swiss print trades.
